What is a Ric Rac Cactus?
A ric rac cactus (also known as a Zig Zag Plant or Fishbone Cactus) is an unusual-looking succulent with zig zagging spines along its stems. It has attractive, deep green foliage and can be grown indoors or outdoors in warm climates. The ric rac cactus is native to Mexico and does not tolerate cold temperatures well, so it should be kept away from frosty environments.
How to Propagate a Ric Rac Cactus
Propagating your own ric rac cacti at home is easy with just a few simple steps:
1. Gather the Materials You’ll Need – To propagate your own ric rac cacti you will need some sharp scissors or pruners, potting mix for succulents, a shallow container for planting, perlite for drainage if needed, and rooting hormone powder (optional).
2. Cut off a Piece of the Stem – Locate an area on the stem that has no spines and use your scissors to cut off about 4-5 inches of stem right below this point. Be sure that there are several healthy leaves attached to the piece of stem you have cut off; these will become new plants!
3. Remove Lower Leaves & Let Dry – Next remove any lower leaves from the cutting and let it dry out overnight in an open space (this helps prevent rot). If you plan on using rooting hormone powder then now would be the time to dip one end of the cutting into it before continuing onto Step 4 below.
4. Plant Your Cuttings – Fill your shallow container with potting mix for succulents until it’s about two thirds full, then add some perlite if desired for improved drainage capabilities. Make individual holes in each corner of the pot large enough so that when placed inside they don’t touch each other’s walls or bases; insert each cutting into one hole up until only their top inch remains outside soil level before patting down lightly around them so that they remain upright without wobbling back out again too easily once watered later on in step 6 below..
